Acceptable use policy
OBDScan talks directly to a vehicle's computer. That is useful, and misused it is dangerous or illegal. This policy describes the use expected of the application and the use that is expressly forbidden. It forms part of the terms and conditions.
1. Safety before anything else
Do not operate the application while driving. In many countries it is an offence, and everywhere it is a bad idea.
- Set up your home screen, your dashboard and your gauges with the vehicle stopped and parked.
- Do not hold the phone in your hand while driving, and do not place it where it obstructs your view or an airbag's deployment.
- Stop the vehicle somewhere safe before reading or clearing codes, reviewing a trip or interpreting a reading.
The application records the trip for you precisely so that you do not have to look at it while driving: review it afterwards.
2. Using the OBD-II adapter
- Connect and disconnect the adapter with the vehicle stopped. A loose adapter under the steering wheel can interfere with the pedals.
- Do not leave a questionable adapter permanently plugged in: some prevent the modules from going to sleep and drain the battery.
- Use the adapter according to its manufacturer's instructions. The application does not control and cannot correct the accessory's electrical behaviour.
- If the vehicle behaves abnormally after an adapter is connected, disconnect it.
3. Expressly prohibited uses
You may not use OBDScan, or the information it shows, to:
- Evade, falsify or prepare to defraud an emissions test or roadworthiness inspection, including clearing codes for the purpose of hiding a fault from an inspection, a sale or a third party.
- Hide relevant information from a buyer or from anyone entitled to know the vehicle's actual condition.
- Attempt to modify, reprogram or unlock control units, odometers, immobilisers or manufacturer parameters. The application offers no such functions, and its query terminal uses a closed command list precisely so as not to permit them.
- Access vehicles you do not own or have express authorisation from the owner to access.
- Use it for racing on public roads or to encourage reckless driving.
- Any purpose contrary to traffic, environmental, data protection or other regulations applicable in your jurisdiction.
Code clearing exists in the application so that you can check whether a fault reappears after a genuine repair, not to switch off a warning light before an inspection.
4. Other people's data
If you use the application in a vehicle other people drive, bear in mind that recorded trips contain locations and can reveal habits, home addresses and routines. Inform whoever is concerned and obtain their consent before recording or sharing that data.
If you share an exported file, you are also sharing the coordinates and, where present, the vehicle's VIN. Check what it contains before sending it.
5. Respect for the application and for third parties
- Do not redistribute the application outside the official stores, nor modified versions of it.
- Do not use it to infringe third-party intellectual property rights or to impersonate the developer.
- Respect the map provider's terms of use: the application requests only the tiles for the visible area and allows neither bulk downloads nor region preloading, and that limitation must not be circumvented.
6. Your responsibility
You are responsible for how you use the application, for the decisions you make from the information it shows and for complying with the rules applicable in your country. The application provides data; the interpretation, the decision to repair and the decision to drive are yours.
If a reading makes no sense to you, a warning light is on, or the vehicle behaves abnormally, see a qualified technician.
The developer is not answerable for misuse of the application, nor for the consequences of using it in breach of this policy. That responsibility rests entirely with whoever uses it.
7. Consequences of breach
As there are no user accounts, the developer neither can nor seeks to monitor how you use the application. Breach of this policy nevertheless terminates the licence granted under the terms and conditions, and may give rise to legal liability towards third parties or the authorities, for which you alone will answer.
